Holy Holy Holy!

Jerusalem is the holiest city in the world – a layer-cake of history and culture, a crucible of emotions and faiths. The city is an international stage to an on-going active drama. During its 5,000-years of accumulated holiness, it was destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, captured and recaptured 44 times, and attacked 52 times, but who’s counting?
Mount Moriah is a sacred site since antiquity. Solomon’s Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians and rebuilt, then built up by Herod to be one of the greatest structures in the ancient world. Only a few years after its completion, the Temple was destroyed by the Romans. The Jews were only permitted to pray outside the Western retaining wall. The Christians sanctified an execution site and a burial cave. They turned Temple mount into a garbage site. The Muslims cleared the area and built a dome above the holy rock, which has been standing there for 1300 years. Jerusalem is a pilgrimage destination for the three monotheistic religions – millions of people come here from all over the world.

Inside the 16th century walls, the most sacred sites are within walking distance from each other. It is a dazzling mixture of ancient and modern, conflict and co-existence. Walking in the alleys, visiting the structures, absorbing breathtaking vistas – Jerusalem is a fascinating, immersive experience.
